Barbeques Galore raises $104,000 for BarbeCURE!

Congratulations to the Barbeques Galore team for their outstanding achievement in honour of their former colleague

Since the launch of BarbeCURE in 2016, Barbeques Galore have done a phenomenal job as a principle sponsor and by rallying their stores nationwide to host their own barbeques in support of cancer research.

Their exceptional commitment was highlighted at the annual Barbeques Galore Conference held last month in Queensland, with over 200 staff members in attendance.

Cure Cancer CEO, Nikki Kinloch, was invited to speak and also presented Barbeques Galore CEO, Luke Naish, with a trophy of appreciation.

“Cure Cancer are extremely grateful for the ongoing support that Barbeques Galore have continued to show us. From their Head Office to the national network of stores, we couldn’t have reached this incredible milestone without their enthusiasm and dedication,” says Nikki.

Sadly, most of us have been affected by cancer and it was in 2012 that a Barbeques Galore staff member, Crisy Connon-McDonald, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, just four months after giving birth to her son.

A passionate store manager and well-loved by her staff, Crisy’s hard battle with cancer moved Luke to make her a promise that he would raise $100,000 in her honour - enough to provide a full, one-year research grant to one of our brightest cancer researchers.

In 2016, Crisy sadly passed away but Luke kept his promise and to date, Barbeques Galore has raised an astounding $104,000, resulting in the Crisy Connon-McDonald Grant.

Crisy’s husband, Adrian, shared a few touching words at the conference, “You all had a huge impact on her life. She spent more than half her life working for Barbeques Galore and you were her family. This would be her 20th year of working here if she were still here and she had no intention of ever leaving. For her, it was the love, the joy and the laughter she shared with all of you that meant everything.”

At the end of the presentation, the grant was officially announced to fund skin cancer researcher, Dr Jessica Duarte. “It means the world to me to receive funding that will enable me to do research that I am extremely passionate about. Thank you Cure Cancer, Barbeques Galore and especially Crisy’s family for your utmost support – I could not do it without you,” says Jessica.
