Goodbye to a dear friend
We were all incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Ed Byrne, who died peacefully but unexpectedly at his Cairns home on Monday 4th September.
This month saw us lose a very dear friend, Ed Byrne. Ed was a founding member of the Leo Cancer Foundation which was set up in memory of his father, Leo Byrne, and eventually went on to become Cure Cancer Australia.
Ed’s contribution and dedication to this organisation can’t be measured. In the early years, he worked with his uncle Arthur and their wider family to set up the Leo Cancer Foundation. Ed continued to be heavily involved when the foundation merged with the Jenny Leukaemia Trust in the 1980s, working tirelessly as a Director and a member of the Fundraising Committee for a decade. He was also one of the founding Cure Cancer Australia Collaboration members, joining the regular giving program when it was established in 2015, and was a Director of the Board from 1998-2013.
Ed made donations to Cure Cancer Australia consistently for almost 20 years, although in his case, donations represent only a fraction of his long-term contributions. He will be fondly remembered for his contribution in the Sail for Cancer Research events, which always involved his much-loved yacht Edwena, and could be relied on to provide help, guidance and support in every situation. His commitment to our organisation was unwavering, and he will be truly missed by so many.
If you would like to make a donation in memory of Ed, you can do so here.
