World’s Biggest Dinner Raises Record Amount!
Cure Cancer fundraiser Carlo Tonini pulls off his most successful event to date…
Earlier this month, Cure Cancer were delighted to attend this year’s World’s Biggest Dinner, hosted by one of our most loyal supporters, the ever-adventurous Carlo Tonini!
Held at Brisbane’s Hotel Grand Chancellor, the evening was MC’d by Gold Medal Olympian Duncan Armstrong, and attended by Carlo’s own friends, family and colleagues. Guests were treated to live music courtesy of Byron Bay band Hayley Grace and The Bay Collective, and enjoyed a delicious three course meal and drinks between fascinating presentations from special guests.
First up was Curtis McGrath OAM, who captivated the crowd with his experiences of losing both legs as a result of stepping on a landmine. His grit and determination to overcome the odds and become a world champion kayaker and Gold Medal Paralympian were truly inspirational.
Cure Cancer grant recipient Dr Lauren Aoude also presented, highlighting her progress in melanoma and the importance of funding research, whilst Cure Cancer ambassador and cancer survivor Lisa Greissl brought the crowd to tears as she shared her story of how cancer research saved her life.
The presentations were rounded off by Carlo himself, who gave us a jaw-dropping update on his recent physical fundraising challenges. Since 2010, Carlo has taken on the world’s toughest marathons to help raise money for Cure Cancer, including the Great Wall of China Marathon, the Big Five Marathon (which saw him run through a game park!), The Inca Trail Marathon – billed as the hardest marathon in the world – and most recently The Ice Marathon in Antarctica.
Next year, Carlo will take on the other coldest marathon in the world, The North Pole Marathon, which will see him join the ‘The Marathon Grand Slam Club’, meaning he would have completed a marathon on all seven continents as well as in the Arctic.
All in all, the evening was a huge success, from the stunning presentation of the room through to the wonderful speakers, excellent food and delightful company. As a result of ticket sales, donations on the night and live auction items, this year’s World’s Biggest Dinner raised a phenomenal $60,158In a truly amazing feat, this means Carlo has now surpassed his personal fundraising goal of $250,000…raising a grand total of $268,089 for Cure Cancer!!
This is an absolutely incredible achievement. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the event, and above all, a huge thank you to Carlo for all his hard work and his ongoing commitment to Cure Cancer. We are so grateful to have his support, and we look forward to working together for many years to come!
