Annual Report FY20
A message from our CEO

The devastating Australian bushfires at the start of the year and the disruption caused by Covid-19 presented many organisations, including Cure Cancer, with a number of unprecedented challenges in FY20.
Despite this, Cure Cancer’s commitment to supporting ground-breaking cancer research has never wavered. Approximately 145,500 cases of cancer are estimated to be diagnosed in Australia this year alone.

In addition, cancer patients are at increased risk from Covid-19 due to compromised immune systems, making the work of our researchers all the more critical.
The necessary cancellation of key fundraising events and social gatherings brought our ability to fundraise in the traditional sense close to standstill this year.
As a result, recent months have seen us pivot existing campaigns to become virtual events, meaning our supporters could continue to raise money for life saving cancer research during lockdown and beyond. From streaming campaigns and virtual dinners through to online fitness programs and even a Guinness World Record attempt, it was truly inspiring to see our community come together across Australia in support of cancer research.

As we continue to adapt to a new normal, Cure Cancer will remain flexible in its strategy with an ongoing focus on innovation. Identifying and prioritising new digital revenue opportunities will remain key as we continue to enhance and expand our digital channels.
Thanks to your generosity, our total revenue this year amassed to $2.86m, continuing the strong pattern of growth we have seen over the past two years.
Thank you for standing by us in supporting this crucial work. Without you, Australian cancer research would not have a future.

What your support means
Alexander Kingsford was diagnosed with cancer when he was just seven years old. Thanks to the work of Cure Cancer alumni Glenn Marshall, his story has a happy ending.
"Cancer is indiscriminate and it has a huge effect on everyone who is affected by it. I know firsthand how important it is to support cancer research. Let’s face it, without research and the work of Professor Glenn Marshall, I might not be here to tell my story today"

Dr Jessica da Gama Duarte
Dr Jessica de Gama Duarte is a 2020 Cure cancer grant recipient whose current research project focuses on immunotherapy.
"This funding has truly launched my scientific career and helped me investigate if my technology can predict therapeutic outcomes. In the long term this could lead to a personalised medicine approach where all cancer patients, irrespective of cancer type, will have a unique tailored therapeutic plan with a high likelihood of treatment success."

The institutes we work with
We partner with the best research institutions in the country to ensure our researchers are given the greatest opportunity for success.

A huge thank you to all of those who have supported Cure Cancer this year. It is thanks to you that lifesaving cancer research is being made possible.
Thanks also to all of those who have kindly donated their products or services, which this year equated to 41% of our total expenses. This generous support helps Cure Cancer significantly reduce our operational costs and ensure more of every dollar donated can go towards the work of our incredible researchers.

Despite the ongoing challenges we are facing as a result of the global pandemic, our researchers are determined to continue with their crucial work, and we are committed to standing by them. You can help directly and immediately by donating to support them.
Thank you so much for joining us in our mission. Together, let’s make this the last generation that dies from cancer.
