Annual Report FY21

A message from our CEO

As we continue to work through an exceptionally difficult period for much of the country and indeed the world, my thoughts are with anyone undergoing cancer treatment during COVID-19. Ongoing restrictions and lockdowns mean that many cancer patients have had their treatment interrupted and are limited to the number of visitors they can receive. This makes what is an already fraught experience all the more difficult.

Despite the challenges of the global pandemic, Cure Cancer remains committed to ensuring cancer research does not stop. 151,000 cases of cancer are estimated to be diagnosed in Australia this year alone. Every one of those cancer patients is counting on us to make a difference.

Thankfully, the enduring support of our donors and partners has allowed us to continue funding Australia’s brightest young scientific minds. Whether it be streaming, head shaves, fitness events, or simply via generous donations, we’ve been incredibly moved to see the way our community continues to come together in support of lifesaving cancer research. Thanks to you, our BarbeCURE campaign has now raised an astounding $1million, providing funding for ten years’ worth of lifesaving cancer research.

Our total revenue this year exceeded $2.32m. Given the significant impact of the global pandemic which saw many businesses and charities struggling, we are pleased with this result. Moving forward, Cure Cancer continues to be flexible in its strategy; monitoring global trends, the future of the giving landscape and shifts in donor behaviour, and engaging the use of new technologies in fundraising accordingly. As always, the mentoring and advocacy of early-career researchers remains a priority.

Thank you for standing by us in supporting this crucial work. You are instrumental to the future of Australian cancer research.

What your support means

Theo Theodosi was diagnosed with Stage III non-small cell lung cancer with metastasis into the lymph nodes in 2017. As a result of his diagnosis, the staging of the cancer and its location, many treatment options were quickly ruled out. He was told he would probably live for another six months, but Cure Cancer recipient Dr Venessa Chin had other ideas.

"Dr Chin advised a new immunotherapy treatment which stimulates the immune system to attack cancer cells. Treatment began and scans every 3 months showed the tumour and metastasis was decreasing. Two years later, the scans showed no signs of cancer, and all lymph node metastasis were now clear.  Without research, I would be dead. I feel incredibly grateful to the brilliant doctors and researchers who are responsible for my recovery."

A/Prof Orazio Vittorio

Dr Orazio Vittorio is a 2021 Cure Cancer grant recipient whose current research project has seen a significant development in the treatment of childhood cancer.

“This breakthrough research could not be done without the generosity of hundreds of donors. We have done this together!

We are confident that our research can enhance the efficacy of current immunotherapies to improve the quality of life of kids with cancer and give them more time to spend with their families.”

The institutes we work with

We partner with the best research institutions in the country to ensure our researchers are given the greatest opportunity for success.

A huge thank you to all of those who have supported Cure Cancer this year. It is thanks to you that lifesaving cancer research is being made possible.

Thanks also to all of those who have kindly donated their products or services, totalling $4.2mn in FY21. This generous support helps Cure Cancer significantly reduce our operational costs and ensure more of every dollar donated can go towards the work of our incredible researchers.

Despite the ongoing challenges we are facing as a result of the global pandemic, our researchers are determined to continue with their crucial work, and we are committed to standing by them. You can help directly and immediately by donating to support them.

Thank you so much for joining us in our mission. Together, let’s make this the last generation that dies from cancer.
