WHAT PROGRESS DID YOU MAKE WITH YOUR RESEARCH IN IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR MELANOMA?
The past two years have been very challenging for researchers. However, we have had some successes - we successfully secured both internal and external funding to expand our research focus - we are now working on new research projects that utilise single cell sequencing to better understand the adaptation and evolution of melanoma in response to immunotherapy and using nanoparticles to improve immunotherapy delivery.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY MAJOR OR MINOR BREAKTHROUGHS IN YOUR PROJECT?
Yes, our group has published and will be publishing several studies detailing how melanoma becomes resistant to immunotherapy and potential strategies that can help overcome treatment resistance.
WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT INCREASE THE RISK OF MELANOMA THAT NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE MAY BE AWARE OF?
There have been many interesting studies linking lifestyle behaviours to increased risk of melanoma - consuming orange and grapefruit juice for example has been linked to increased melanoma risk. However, these studies need to be interpreted and communicated carefully to avoid mass confusion and unnecessary panic. As long as we stay sun-safe and sun-smart, then we are minimising the risk of melanoma.
WHAT ARE OTHER WAYS OF PREVENTION THAT NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE DO CORRECTLY OR AT ALL?
Re-applying sunscreen. Don't assume that wearing sunscreen at the start of the day is enough. Most sunscreens should be reapplied every 2-3 hours (or when recommended by the particular brand of sunscreen you use) especially if you are out in the sun all day long.
VITAMIN D IS AN ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT FOR THE BODY AND IS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH UVB AND SUN EXPOSURE. HOW DO WE ADDRESS VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY WHILE STAYING SUN-SAFE?
I think most people don't realise that just a few minutes in the sun most days of the week is enough to maintain adequate Vit D levels. We can also get sufficient Vit D as long as we maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet. So, it is very easy to get enough Vit D while still minimising sun exposure and being sun-safe.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF SKIN CANCER RESEARCH?
Our group is part of the Melanoma Institute Australia, and we have a common mission - Zero deaths from melanoma. I sincerely hope that my research on melanoma will contribute towards that mission.
