Meet City2Surf fundraiser, Eve Harrison
By Emily Usher | 5 August 2024
We catch up with Eve Harrison, who will be running City2Surf this year and raising money for Cure Cancer in memory of her mum.
Eve Harrison lost her beloved mum to cervical cancer three years ago, so when another friend passed away from the disease earlier this year, she made up her mind to do something which would honour both their memories.
Although Eve has never taken part in City2Surf, it’s an event that has always interested her. “I’d seen City2Surf advertised for years, but I aways felt like I needed a reason to run, and a reason to fundraise. Having lost my mum, and then later my friend, it made sense this year to raise money in support of groundbreaking cancer research.”
Raising money for Cure Cancer
“When mum was ill, an advert popped up for Cure Cancer on social media,” explains Eve. “Dad and I wanted to support the organisation, so we started gifting each other something from the Cure Cancer website each year. When it came to finding a charity to support at City2Surf, Cure Cancer seemed like a great fit.”
Eve’s fundraising efforts hit the ground running, and within a couple of weeks she’d already surpassed her fundraising goals by raising over $2000. “I made sure I told as many people as possible that I’d signed up to City2Surf - family, friends and even colleagues. I couldn't believe how many people wanted to support me. It was amazing. I think having a good reason for people to donate really helped encourage everyone’s generosity. It’s also made me feel more motivated to fundraise.”
Getting race ready
Eve is now looking forward to the big day and has been training hard to make sure she’s race ready. “I’m running 5km around three times a week and have also done a few 10km races to keep me motivated.”
“I’ll be traveling to Sydney the night before the race, and my plan is to stock up on lots of carbs for energy, then have a really great night’s sleep so I feel good for race day,” says Eve. “I’m running with a friend of mine, so I know we’ll spur each other on. We’ve both agreed not to push ourselves too hard at the start of the race so that we can keep a good pace up until the end.”
“I’m most excited about the atmosphere. I've seen lots of videos of the finish line and all the incredible support on the day. I feel so proud that I’m helping to raise money for Dr Jennifer Currenti, and I’m incredibly grateful that they're doing such important work.”
Help Eve go further with her fundraising!
