From surviving to streaming: How Jess Wyatt turned her story into $30,000 for cancer research

Six years ago, Jess Wyatt was simply hoping to make it through tomorrow.

Today, the Australian Twitch Partner and variety streamer best known for her gaming content and chaotic cosplay streams has raised over $30,000 for cancer research, one Wednesday night stream at a time. A blood cancer survivor and passionate advocate for research funding, Jess has built a community on Twitch that shows up not just for the content, but for something far bigger. And if you ask her how it feels to be on this side of that journey, she'll tell you it feels surreal.

"There was once a version of me simply hoping to make it through tomorrow," Jess says, "and now I stand five years cancer-free with a community helping change tomorrows for others."

Six years cancer-free. Thirty thousand dollars raised. And a community that turned a stream into something much bigger than gaming.

Turning pain into purpose

For Jess, fundraising through Game on Cancer® has never just been about the numbers. It is about what those numbers represent.

"Reaching $30k feels like turning pain into purpose," she says. "Every dollar represents kindness, generosity, and people choosing hope. To me, it is proof that even the hardest seasons of life can still grow something beautiful."

That sense of meaning runs through everything Jess does on stream. She knows firsthand what it means to be on the receiving end of hope, and she has made it her mission to pay that forward.

"Research matters because hope does not appear by accident," she says. "It is built in labs, in hospitals, in long nights of work, and in the determination to give people more time. Behind every breakthrough is a person who gets another chance, another birthday, another ordinary day that suddenly becomes priceless."

It is that belief, rooted in lived experience, that keeps her coming back. "I know firsthand that research saves lives. If my community and I can even be a small part of that story, then every stream means something greater."

The community behind the cause

Jess is quick to share the credit. Ask her who deserves a shout-out, and she will tell you: everyone.

"My community is the heart of everything," she says. "They are kind, chaotic, generous, and endlessly compassionate. They have shown up not only with donations, but with laughter, encouragement, and love. Some people gave money, some gave time, some gave comfort, and all of it mattered."

It is that collective generosity, that sense of showing up for something bigger than any one person, that sits at the core of what Game on Cancer® is all about. And Jess embodies it completely.

"They have turned a stream into a family and kindness into real change. I would not be here without them."

What $30,000 actually does

Every dollar raised through Game on Cancer® goes directly to helping emerging researchers test bold new ideas, the kind of ideas that could one day change outcomes for people across Australia and beyond. The practical costs of research, lab time, equipment, data analysis, and early proof-of-concept work, are often the hardest to fund. That is where the community steps in.

Jess knows this better than most. And she uses her platform to make sure her viewers do too.

"To use my platform for something bigger than myself is a privilege I never take lightly," she says.

That privilege, and that responsibility, is something she carries into every stream.
