Game On Cancer® Spotlight: Sonny Movement’s birthday charity streamathon for cancer research

By The Cure Cancer Team | 28 March 2025

To celebrate his birthday this year, Sonny Movement supported Cure Cancer’s gaming initiative, Game On Cancer®, to raise funds for cutting-edge cancer research through a week-long charity stream!

Earlier this year, Sonny Movement, a Twitch variety streamer from Victoria, celebrated his birthday by hosting a $10K Birthday Charity Streamathon for Cure Cancer. Clocking dozens of hours during his birthday week, Sonny rallied his community to go well beyond his initial $10,000 goal – raising well over $13,000 for cancer research!

Sonny is no stranger to fundraising for a good cause. This was already his 8th birthday charity stream and since he first started streaming in 2020, he has raised over $52,296 for several charities. In this Q&A, Sonny shares how he got started with charity streaming and his highlights from his Cure Cancer birthday charity stream:

1. What are three things you'd like people to know about you?

I'm overly ambitious, I'm trying to make a difference, and I always try to stay optimistic in the most dire situations.

2. Since 2020, you've raised over $50K for charities like Cure Cancer. What first motivated you to stream for good?

It was always the idea of making a difference to the lives of many. In high school, we ran a program called MAD (Make A Difference) Day, where we would raise money for charities and go on a school-wide walk. The ideology of making a difference stuck with me and led to me streaming for the first time.

At the start of 2020, Australia was suffering through severe bushfires that displaced many families. I always celebrate my birthday in January, so I began a birthday fundraiser to raise money for the NSW Bushfires to try to make a difference. One of my incentives was to do a birthday stream so I could incentivise myself to raise more money! We manage to hit the goal (over $7,000) and eventually, that's what led to my love of streaming and streaming for good!

3. Why did you choose to support cancer research for your 5th charity stream?

I saw the support that Cure Cancer provides for streamers. I've also personally had friends and family that have dealt with cancer, and I wanted to find a charity that was close to my heart.

4. Can you share some of your favourite moments from your Game On Cancer® birthday streamathon?

Some of the best moments of the stream were when:

  • I dressed up as Bob Ross and The Lorax!
  • The moment we hit $10K and quickly ascended to $12K
  • Finding more games to play with my community
  • Our Third Annual Awards show

5. What are your fundraising tips for other streamers and content creators who would like to get involved with Game On Cancer®?

Set yourself a goal that you are comfortable raising (No matter how big or small it is, you're already making a difference), and don't be afraid to message your other streaming friends to collaborate and help out with your streams!
